Understanding the Two Calendars

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a purely lunar calendar that has been in use since the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE — an event known as the Hijra, which gives the calendar its name.

Because the Hijri year is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year (354–355 days vs. 365–366 days), Islamic months shift earlier each year relative to the Gregorian calendar. This is why Ramadan, Eid, and other Islamic observances fall on different Gregorian dates each year.
