What is the Day of Arafah?

The Day of Arafah (Yawm Arafah) is the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. It is the most important day of the Hajj pilgrimage, when millions of pilgrims stand at the plain of Arafat in devotion and supplication. For Muslims not performing Hajj, it is highly recommended to fast on this day. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described it as the day when Allah frees the most people from the Hellfire.

Fasting on the Day of Arafah

For Muslims who are not performing Hajj, fasting the Day of Arafah is one of the most highly recommended voluntary fasts. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Fasting the Day of Arafah, I hope from Allah that it expiates the sins of the year before it and the year after it." This makes it an opportunity to have two years of sins forgiven through a single day of fasting.

Arafah and the Hajj Pilgrimage

Standing at Arafah (Wuquf) is the central pillar of Hajj — without it, the Hajj is not valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafah." Pilgrims spend the day at the plain of Arafat in prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah from after noon until sunset. It is a day that resembles the Day of Judgment, as all pilgrims stand equal before Allah seeking His mercy and forgiveness.
